South Plainfield is situated in the northern section of Middlesex County, approximately 26 miles southwest of New York City, 60 miles northeast of Philadelphia and covers 8.3 square miles. The Borough has excellent access to US Highway 1, Interstates 95, 78 287, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. Area roadways are within 26 miles of the Ports of New York, Newark and Elizabeth and four major airports are easily accessible.

The area that became South Plainfield was originally included in the ‘Elizabethtown Purchase’ of 1664 and most of the first settlers were of Scottish descent. The British occupied this area from December 1776 to June 1777 and much fighting took place during that time between the troops of General Washington and General Cornwallis. It was not until the 1920’s that South Plainfield began to acquire its own identity and the township was incorporated in 1926.

The South Plainfield school community comprises of four elementary schools, Grant School for 5th and 6th graders, South Plainfield Middle School for 7th and 8th graders and South Plainfield High School encompasses grades 9 to 12. Additionally, pre-school and latchkey programs are offered each year.

South Plainfield is a busy place with a rapid population growth and mushrooming housing developments. To accommodate the growth, a 355-condominium/townhouse development has been built on the Edison border. There are also many single-family homes. Muhlenberg Hospital, which was founded in 1877, is situated in South Plainfield.

The township has seven municipal parks, including Spring Lake Park which has a gazebo and a lake and across from which is the Veterans Monument Park. Nearby there is Highland Avenue Woods, a 35-acre sanctuary for exotic birds and small animals with trees, trails and wildflowers.
