The settlement of New Brunswick goes back to the 1680’s, when a group of English colonists from Long Island purchased land along the Raritan River. New Brunswick developed as an active shipping center during the 18th century. The town continued as a transportation hub during the 19th century, but the coming of the railroad shifted the action from the water to the land and the city began to develop industrially.

New Brunswick is also home to Rutgers University and the State University. It is considered a major university and one of the best State schools in the nation. Its library is ranked among the top 25 in the country.

New Brunswick calls itself the Healthcare City because of St. Peter’s, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and various affiliates, the University of Medicine and Dentistry and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

New Brunswick is also the cultural hub of Central New Jersey as the home of the three theaters of the New Brunswick Cultural Center. The Center includes two professional repertory theaters, the George Street Playhouse and Crossroads Theater Company. It also includes the 2,000 seat State Theater which presents classical music, opera, jazz, theater and the American Repertory Ballet Company. There are also many fine restaurants in the theater district, which cater to this vibrant area.

During the day, the city’s population roughly triples with activity related to the hospitals, university and businesses. New Brunswick’s position as the county seat also brings “outsiders” to town. With a Hispanic community that doubled in the 1990s and an influx of new immigrants from a variety of countries, New Brunswick is the most diverse municipality in Central New Jersey and the fifth-most diverse in the state.

The city is touted as a national model for revitalization: from gritty to glittering, redevelopment and new buildings have transformed much of the city over the last 30 years. For recreation, the 10-acre Boyd Park along the Raritan River serves as a popular spot.
